National Day of Action: Make the call for a fair and functioning democracy

Today, January 17, 2019 is a National Day of Action to fight for a fair democracy! Corporate CEOs and the wealthiest 1% have spent decades rigging the system to reduce our power and make it harder and harder to pass legislation that helps working people. It’s time to do something about it.

Call 1-888-848-4824 to tell your Congressperson:

I support the For the People Act (H.R. 1) for a fair and functioning democracy. The bill will make it easier to vote and get secret money out of our elections.

The same corporate interests that fight us at the bargaining table are stacking the rules against us when it comes to political participation. They’ve put restrictions in place that make it harder for people to vote, flooded elections with money, and weakened the rules that prevent elected officials from profiting from their public service.

The new Congressional leadership promised to make reform a top priority. The For the People Act is the first major piece of legislation they are considering this year. The bill would:

Make it easier, not harder, to vote by restoring the Voting Rights Act, implementing national voter registration, expanding early voting and ending gerrymandering.

Get big money out of our democracy by regulating big money in politics like Super PACS, requiring all political organizations to disclose their donors, and building a campaign finance system to increase and multiply the power of small donors.

Ensure public officials work for the public interest by expanding conflict of interest law, strengthening oversight of lobbyists, and more.

If those sound like changes we need to make, call your member of Congress today at 1-888-848-4824.

FLIP THE HOUSE: Volunteers Needed for Labor Walks

Join CWA Local 1037 as we knock on doors of fellow union households to let them know how important the midterm Congressional races are, especially in New Jersey. With ongoing attacks on workers’ and union rights, we must elect pro-union candidates to Congress who will put the interests of working families first.

Control of the House of the Representatives in 2018 will be decided by a small number of swing districts, places where the last election was decided by a thin margin. You can make a big difference in helping to take control of Congress away from anti-worker and anti-union politicians, and electing pro-worker candidates.

Walks will be from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (Please arrive no later than 8:45 am for to receive walk turf and instructions)

Join us in this critical effort by showing up to our labor walks! Click here to sign up for our Labor-to-Labor walks.
