HELP IN THE FIGHT TO CHANGE
MOTOR VEHICLE AGENCY HOURS
New Schedule is Bad for the Public, Abusive to Workers
On July 31, 2010 the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission implemented a new operating schedule which included being closed on Mondays. Management told the workers that these changes were being made in order to make the agencies more “convenient to the customer.” Instead, the new motor vehicle agency schedule has resulted in long lines and longer wait times for the public.
At the same time, the schedule is abusive to workers and their families. This is very tiring work and involves highly-stressed customer service interaction (made worse by the long lines!) The new schedule, which requires those employed at the agencies to work nearly 11 hour days is not sustainable for most workers. What’s worse, management has refused individual hardships and requests to accommodate workers who are either physically unable to keep up with the schedule or for whom the schedule creates problems with child and elder care.
Meanwhile, services are deteriorating. We all remember the bad old days of the privatized motor vehicles agencies. Wait times were so long that you had to bring a lunch or had to plan to spend the entire day in order to get the simplest transaction completed. We don’t want to go back to the bad old days, which is what appears to be happening.
Everyone agrees that that since the ending of privatization -- and prior to this new schedule -- the Motor Vehicle Commission had provided an improved level of customer service at every facility. MVC attributed the improved customer satisfaction to the expansion of services and improved employee development. Now they want to go backwards! The new schedule cuts service hours the public needs while creating a work environment which will result in less productivity.
The solution is simple: Re-open Mondays. Lines will decrease because there will be more hours available to the public. Workers will be able to schedule their 40 hour weeks in a way that provides for a humane work day while having the flexibility to balance the demands of family life.
