Who will be there? All teachers, students, athletes, librarians, nurses, college professors, college students, parks workers, parks patrons, veterans, people with disabilities, seniors, home owners, renters, bus and train riders, bus drivers, doctors, DYFS workers, counselors, food stamp workers, motor vehicle clerks, custodians, lunch ladies, artists, musicians, coaches, toll takers, bridge inspectors, unemployment counselors, police officers, firefighters, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, and everyone else who loves New Jersey.
Governor Christie is submitting up to 33 bills that will amend, distort, and destroy Civil Service and Public Worker Bargaining Rights in New Jersey.
Here are just a few of Christie’s proposals:
- No matter what you are earning, no matter what the economy, no matter what concessions you have made in the past, no matter what big raises are being given to management, Christie proposes to PERMANENTLY cap the entire wage increase that can be collectively bargained (this is bargaining?) to 2.5% a year inclusive of benefits, leave days and anything else.
- Cut future pension benefits for current workers by 9-11%. Raise the retirement age to 65. Add additional costs for healthcare. Eliminate Cost of Living Adjustments to pensions for current and future retirees.
- Amend the Civil Service layoff law to allow politicians to pick out politically connected workers who are exempted from layoffs by just declaring them to be more senior than others.
- Eliminate Major Discipline appeal rights (right to a neutral hearing) for suspensions of less than 30 working days.
- Control the selection of all arbitrators of discipline, grievance and collective bargaining. Decide who the arbitrators are, how much they will be paid, how they can conduct of cancel their hearings. In other words- no neutral arbitrators!
And… giving millionaires a tax break!
YOU cannot sit this one out. Every working family must fight for services, fair taxes, democratic collective bargaining rights, and a Merit and Fairness system that protects the public from patronage and corruption.
